Overview

Applicants are invited to fill the following vacant position at St. Jude Hospital: Medical Technologists 

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting preferred.
  • Proficiency in laboratory information systems (LIS) and relevant software is an asset.
  • Possess a valid registration with the St. Lucia Allied Health Council.

Key Responsibilities

Laboratory Testing and Analysis:

Specimen Processing and Analysis:

  • Receive and process patient specimens, ensuring proper labeling and handling.
  • Perform routine and specialized tests on blood, urine, tissue, and other body fluids using automated and manual techniques.
  • Conduct microscopic examinations and analyze chemical components in samples.
  • Prepare and stain slides for microscopic analysis as required.

Test Result Interpretation and Reporting:

  • Interpret and validate test results, ensuring accuracy and reliability.
  • Enter test results into the laboratory information system (LIS) promptly, adhering to accepted international lab turnaround time standards. 
  • Communicate critical and abnormal test results to the appropriate healthcare providers immediately.
  • Provide detailed and clear documentation of test procedures and results.

Quality Control and Assurance:

  • Perform regular quality control procedures to monitor the accuracy and precision of test results.
  • Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Participate in internal and external quality assessment programs.
  • Document and report quality control activities and any deviations from established protocols.

Operational Support and Efficiency:

Equipment Maintenance and Troubleshooting:

  • Ensure that all laboratory equipment is functioning correctly and safely.
  • Perform routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory instruments.
  • Identify and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, coordinating repairs as necessary.

Inventory Management:

  • Monitor inventory levels of laboratory supplies and reagents.
  • Prepare and submit orders for necessary supplies to avoid shortages.
  • Ensure proper storage and handling of laboratory materials to maintain integrity and compliance.

Procedure Development and Compliance:

  • Assist in the development and revision of laboratory procedures and protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations, including OSHA and CLIA standards.
  • Participate in laboratory inspections and accreditation processes, preparing necessary documentation and reports.

Collaboration and Communication:

Team Coordination and Support:

  • Work collaboratively with laboratory staff to ensure efficient workflow and high-quality service.
  • Provide guidance and support to lab assistants, phlebotomists, and junior technologists.
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to discussions on laboratory improvements and problem-solving.

Interdepartmental Communication:

  • Communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers regarding test results and laboratory procedures.
  • Address and resolve any issues or discrepancies related to laboratory services in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with other departments to support patient care and laboratory operations.

Training and Development:

  • Participate in the training and orientation of new laboratory staff.
  • Stay current with advancements in laboratory technology and methodologies through continuing education and professional development.
  • Share knowledge and expertise with colleagues to promote a culture of continuous learning and improvement.

Salary will be paid in accordance with the terms stipulated by The Board of St. Jude Hospital  and will be commensurate with experience and qualifications for the post.
